Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are principled, uncompromising and often ahead of their time. NOW is a leader, not a follower, of public opinion.
What we do at the Peoria Illinois Local Chapter
- Participate with Illinois NOW State council & conference meetings
- Attend National NOW conferences
- Initiate task forces on issues important to feminist concerns
We meet every few months for programs on topics of interest to feminists.
As March is National Women's History Month, the Peoria Chapter of NOW annually recognizes women or groups of women of achievement who benefit, mentor or encourage women and girls. Peoria NOW has held meetings of specific or timely interest; for example, an eclectic group gathered at Landmark for the screening of Missrepresentation followed by a lively discussion. Individual members may share experiences, such as a program on the living conditions of women in Haiti from a member who traveled there on a humanitarian mission.
We network with other activists in the Peoria area on issues of common concern. If you would like to join us, fill out a membership application. Contact us to join or get information on current activities. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 1185, Peoria, IL 61653.
What we don't do
Our staff and resources are limited. Unfortunately, we can not provide legal advice or counseling. Please reference these Networking groups in the Greater Peoria Area for help with these matters.
History of Peoria Chapter
The Peoria Chapter of NOW has been a presence in Peoria since 1973. Over the years we have addressed many issues affecting the lives of women, both locally and in cooperation with the State and National NOW. The Peoria Chapter was one of the first in Illinois, founded in 1973, after National NOW was founded in 1966. *Point of interest: Betty Friedan, author of the Feminine Mystique, was one of the founding members of the National Organization of Women and from Peoria.
